Abstract
Every style of building construction reflects a clearly distinctive basic principle that represents a particular culture and era. In this context, the Indian Hindu temple architecture is not only the abode of God and place of worship, but they are also the cradle of knowledge, art, architecture and culture. There exist many parameters that describe acoustic quality of an enclosure. The importance of some has been already established in the pioneering study of Beranek [1] and later by other researchers [2][3][4][5][17], but there is still no concrete agreement on a set of parameters that should be taken into account while describing the acoustical quality of a temple enclosure [6]. This is due to differences in functionality of a given room, volume of rooms, distribution of absorption, etc. [7][8][3][4]. The present architectural acoustic research study entails analysing the sound produced by bells inside six temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in Vadodara city, Gujarat State. The sound captured by SPL meter (make HTC, No. SL1352) and audio recorder is analysed using computerized techniques (Software’s used: VizIR, Odeon, Origin Pro8, Audacity). The outcome of this study is expected to throw light on the quality of materials used for construction of temples and characterize few acoustical parameters which are to be taken care of during construction of temples in future.
