A ROBUST AND SCALE INDEPENDENT APPROACH TO RAGA RECOGNITION FOR HINDUSTANI CLASSICAL MUSIC

Abstract
Music plays important role in human life. Musical analysis is interdisciplinary and challenging field of research nowadays. Raga is an essential and central characteristic of Indian Classical music. Recognition of Raga is a complex problem since different performances based on the same Raga may have different associated note-sequences. In this paper, we propose a new robust algorithm for Raga recognition problem. We use Hidden Markov model to represent Ragas and train the HMMs on first order differences of the swear sequence, consequently our method naturally achieves the scale independence. The model is trained on 63 songs of 5 Ragas. We take input as audio file and by detecting the pitch, note sequence is generated and for some songs, notation sequence is directly taken. We achieve 95.23% accuracy.
