Abstract
The objective of reducing green house gas (GHG) emissions to 80–95% below 1990 levels by 2050, the European Union (EU) has analyzed the energy sector implications of the European Commission’s Energy Roadmap 2050, which investigates how this goal can be achieved, taking in to account different scenarios. Electricity will be transported over longer distances and across national borders to be delivered where the consumption needs arise. Such a long-distance yet meshed transmission network at the pan-European level brings an opportunity: the innovative concept of an “electricity highway system” (EHS). The electrifying Highway is twice as efficient as internal combustion engines. The Siemens innovation supplies trucks with power from an overhead contact line. This means that not only is energy consumption cut in half but also local air pollution is reduced. The e-highway concept is particularly effective from an environmental and economic point of view on heavily used .The aim is to eliminate local emissions completely, reduce the use of fossil fuels, cut operating costs and establish a basis for using the system on a commercial basis in the future.
