Abstract
The conventional braking system works on the principle of utilization of frictional force to convert kinetic energy of a moving body to heat energy. This heat energy is dissipated in the atmosphere by the braking pads thereby increasing their temperature and abating the efficiency of the system. This paper is an exploration of a radical braking system, called as eddy current braking system. This regenerative system works on the principle of electromagnetic induction, employing magnetic force to outset the brakes. Due to the relative motion between the magnet and conductor, eddy currents are induced on the surface of the metal. These eddy currents catalyze a torque which opposes the motion. The model proposed in the paper is an illustration of this optimal braking system. In this paper we have changed the magnetic strength of the magnets by using different types of magnet such as ceramic and neodymium magnet and a hybrid of both. The deceleration of the disk is noted down at various time intervals. The main purpose of the study is to perform a comparative study by changing the different parameters used in the model and accordingly get the results.
